Are you struggling to develop treatment interventions that work with acting-out children and their families? Do you feel traditional approaches are not effective? This course will provide an overview of the issues and problems that may be contributing to treatment resistant acting-out behavior, and offers a framework for assessing and treating these children and their families. Utilizing behavioral and case examples, the reader will be able to translate these problems into specific treatment objectives, and develop an understanding of the treatment process in moving the child from verbalizing feelings to self-regulation. This course is designed for clinicians who are actively working with children.

Course Objectives
  • Identify the complex issues and problems contributing to treatment resistant acting-out behavior in children.
  • List and prioritize specific treatment objectives to target acting-out behaviors, decrease these behaviors over time, and improve the child's relationship with others.
  • Identify intervention strategies to assist children in the process of understanding, naming, and tolerating a broader range of feelings, as well as learning to self-regulate their behavior.
  • Identify skills to work more effectively with parents and other supports in understanding and responding to their child's behavior.
  • Identify a three tier system for prioritizing parenting goals to use in the home with their child.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Bonnie Barclay, L.C.S.W., earned both her undergraduate degree in Psychology and her Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She has extensive experience working with children, adults, and families in a variety of treatment settings including both direct practice and supervisory positions. She specializes in trauma related issues, mood disorders, and behavior problems in children. In addition to being President of eLearning Essentials, Bonnie is currently a grief educator for divorcing parenting classes and is on the board for the Cokesbury Children's Center. She has presented at workshops and conducted community education seminars throughout East Tennessee. Bonnie enjoys living in Knoxville, Tennessee with her husband and two children.
