The purpose of this course is to increase awareness of the impact of traumatic stress and crisis on individuals. This includes understanding what defines a traumatic event, how an event can impact an individual, and who is at risk for developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. Signs and symptoms of PTSD in both children and adults are covered. Also, general coping skills and more complex therapeutic interventions used to treat PTSD are discussed. The author discusses her personal experience working with a crisis program involving law enforcement. This course is designed for mental health professionals seeking an overview of working with trauma survivors and would also benefit nurses and educators working with individuals who are or who have experienced a traumatic event or crisis.

Course Objectives
  • Define a traumatic event.
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of Stress Disorders, including Acute Traumatic Stress Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
  • Distinguish between individuals most at-risk for developing PTSD and those experiencing symptoms typical of a traumatic event.
  • Identify and describe skills to manage symptoms of PTSD.
  • Identify and describe therapeutic interventions for PTSD.
  • Identify and describe coping skills to help children deal with a trauma and crisis.
  • Summarize the purpose of crisis programs such as the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Program.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Kim Moats, L.P.C., received her B.A. in psychology and her M.S. in Community Agency Counseling from the University of Tennessee. Since that time, her primary focus has been working with clients who have severe and persistent mental illness. Currently, Kim is working with both children and adults as the Coordinator of Developmental Disabilities Services. In this role, she works closely with the East Tennessee Mental Retardation/Developmental Disabilities Regional Office. She is also an active member of the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CSID) Team.
