This home study course is based on the book Helping Bereaved Children, edited by Nancy Boyd Webb. This handbook offers a range of therapeutic approaches and interventions that are grounded in developmental psychology and focus on children from preschool through adolescence who have experienced loss. This handbook will remain a valuable resource to clinicians/counselors well after the completion of the course. The book utilizes case examples throughout the text to illustrate how theory translates into practice. The case examples are presented in a format that allows readers to see the dialogue between the child and practitioner as well as the thoughts of the clinician, including his/her rationale for the interventions used. The examples reflect a broad range of situations and experiences that result in loss by a child. This course is designed for practitioners who are new to working with bereaved children as well as educators and nurses who would like a better understanding of these children.

Course Objectives

• Identify the three groups of interacting factors integral to thoroughly assessing bereaved children.
• Identify and weigh six family life cycle factors to determine the degree of disruption in a family following a death of any family member.
• Identify play therapy techniques especially useful for working with bereaved children.
• Apply the four major sibling responses related to the grief of siblings as a guide for helping grieving children.
• Identify the five factors contributing to complicated grief reactions in children following a suicide.
• Distinguish between normal grief reactions and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder according to the criteria of the DSM-IV-TR.
• Apply protocols for informing students in a school setting about a sudden death.
• Identify and apply the advantages, disadvantages, and special indications for family, group, and individual therapy to determine the appropriate intervention for bereaved children.
• Identify and apply specific coping strategies for practitioner's working with bereaved children.

This book was written by numerous experts in the field and edited by Nancy Boyd Webb.

Nancy Boyd Webb, DSW, BCD, RPT-S is a board-certified diplomate in clinical social work and a leading authority on play therapy with children who have experienced loss. Dr. Webb has been a professor on the faculty of the Fordham University School of Social Service since 1979, and in 1997 was named University Distinguished Professor of Social Work. In addition to teaching and writing, Dr. Webb maintains a clinical practice and lectures in the United States and abroad. She is widely published in professional journals and her books are considered essential references for clinical courses and with agencies that work with children.
